Hazlitt Holland Hibbert (HHH) is showing a collection of self-portraits by Frank Auerbach, now in his nineties.
As the Covid pandemic deprived Auerbach of his regular models he turned his gaze to the only person available – himself.
There are 22 pieces altogether – here are a few of the ones I connected most with.
While reflections are often a problem when taking photos (why don’t they use non-reflective art glass?) I quite like the beardy effects that came out in the two below.
It remains a wonder to me that a few marks on a surface can create so much… something endlessly magical.
