Currently on at Frith Street Gallery, Disarm by Fiona Banner aka Vanity Press lingers in the mind for a surprisingly long time.
Fiona Banner is interested in language, gender and conflict.
In this show her film of a jet flypast is a remarkable thing to watch with military hardware performing a highly skilled statement of peace.
Each letter is formed of a different fighter: D- Flying Leopard; I – Typhoon; S – Flanker; A – Falcon; R – Golden Eagle; M- Lightning. Some of these planes have been used against one another in active conflict.
The graphite drawings are displayed in frames made from the recast metal of a Tornado ZE728. Graphite is an industrial lubricant; the metal can be melted and reconfigured. Nothing has to remain in one state.
Another piece on show is a dummy’s arm transformed into the hour hand of a clock. Watch the video here. It also features in a film in the downstairs gallery with a lot more to experience. Please click here for a more comprehensive summary of the show as I am constrained in this post by the one-minute rule.
