Do Ho Suh is best known for his gauze sculptures of indoor spaces. This retrospective show, Walk the House at Tate Modern, however, gives us a more rounded view of his work exploring the concept of houses and home.
Home within Home is a 1:9 model in resin of his childhood home in Seoul Korea set within the rented apartments in Providence that he first lived in when moving to the US.
Memory and place are everywhere, even in the wallpaper which you hardly notice upon entering but which, if you look more closely,
is composed of thouseands of tiny faces. Who Am We?
Suh and Rebecca Boyle Suh made pocket dresses for their daughters where they could put their most important items. As they were 8 and 10 at the time, the dresses have become time capsules of that period of their lives.
The practice of drawing is important to Suh, with many small drawings on display, some with standard materials such as pencils and watercolours, others in thread
all exploring the concept of house and home.
