My first visit to Lubomirov-Easton in Deptford on a cold night revealed the work of Daryl Brown who has recently completed a residency here. This is his composite wood and acrylic sculpture, “Hummingbird” which, from some angles, looked as if it was lit inside.
Daryl’s aim here was how to inhabit the space. The piece below, taking up one side of the gallery, looks from a distance like steel tape but is in fact made from much more vulnerable VHS tape. Iavor Lubomirov showed me other pieces in the back, one of which, “I’m not playing anymore”, is above. The obvious care in the craftsmanship was a pleasure to see, a trend which Iavor notes, is returning to contemporary sculpture.
