Machomarchy. 158.8 x 71.8cm

The Myth of Man was the most recent Daniel Hosego exhibition at James Freeman Gallery where his trademark etching style explored contemporary masculinity culture wars with art historical & classical references.

In the panoramic Machomarchy, Centaurs wearing baseball caps, wielding barbells and golf clubs ride into battle, the injured prone amongst beer cans.

Zoom in to any of the images to enjoy the wealth of detail.

Some knowledge of art history and mythology helps but is not essential to understand what’s going on. The titles and familiarity with social media contribute to the mashup. I’ve included some links for the mythological stuff.

Medusa references abound with serpents agogo…

Dicktych. 96.4 x 62cm

The tongue-in-cheek diptych reflects a male point of view of conjugal life.

Another large painting in the gallery window gives you a good idea of the artist’s intent despite the reflections.
