This is always a delight to visit and very inspirational: some of the best contemporary applied arts around shown by galleries from all over the world.
This is in no way comprehensive but here goes with some of the makers working in ceramics who caught my eye.
Bluecoat Gallery showed Stephen Bird’s slightly subversive take on the Staffordshire pottery traditions; probably truer historically than we would like to think.
Another maker represented by Bluecoat is Paul Scott, again very much from the traditional craft of tableware, this time working from his experience of visiting the closed Spode factory in Stoke-on-Trent. these documentary pieces have a touching poignancy about them.
A very different piece by the Scandinavian maker Marit Tingleff is a huge lashing painted platter, reminiscent of Turner’s stormscapes.
More to follow; let me know if there are any particular aspects you’d like me to talk about.
