As we enter 2021 I really wanted to post something optimistic and uplifting.
Neon looks at its best in the dark but I was happier cycling on a chilly grey morning to see the exuberant and joyful Tate Britain winter commission by Chila Kumari Singh Burman, open for all to enjoy even while all museums and galleries remain closed. “Remembering a brave new world” shines from the top of the neo-classical facade emphasising the gorgeous mix of imagery, pattern and text.
South Asian and British imagery reflects the rich mix of cultures existing in the UK today. Rangoli designs on the steps join Hindu gods and Bollywood imagery on the columns
Parts of her personal history are included: the ice cream van from the family business with the phrase “we are here coz you were there” and
the fundamental truth that “without us there is no Britain”, reminding all viewers of the UK’s history.
Something you can only see inside is the gorgeously decorated auto-rickshaw or tuk-tuk
with a myriad of detail including glittery iced lolly fairy lights
and her initials – the same as mine!
