Thanks again to Katie Hessel’s Great Women Artists podcast for introducing me to Howardena Pindell. The interview gives a fascinating insight into her life and work.
Working in different media throughout her long career, Pindell has covered collage, painting, video and photography.
Her seminal video piece Free White and 21 , unfortunately still pertinent today, shocked the American art establishment and took years to be accepted as a work of art in that world.
In contrast to the tough activist work her abstract pieces are joyous and colourful, with the circle a central motif.
There’s a fascinating range of work to discover – I’ve just pulled a few images up to whet your appetite so encourage you to find out more.
