Plight of the London artist: Kostas Synodis shown at Art16

30/05/2016

As an artist living and working in London I’m on the lookout for affordable studio space. My current studio is at home so, although I’m lucky to have a designated room, I miss the community. Many artists have neither the space nor the means and, with more & more existing affordable studio spaces taken over by developers, the creative lifeblood of London is being sucked out.

Curators Julian Page and Joanna Bryant, whose work I have already featured here, decided to highlight this problem at Art16 by showing, not only the work of young artist Kostas Synodis, but also his current workspace which is smaller than a prison cell.

From this tiny cubby hole, Kostas produces

these sculptures reminiscent of Richard Serra‘s monumental corten steel work but in treated foam rubber.

They are light and as fragile as porcelain in contrast to their appearance.
