More history in St Pancras Gardens

25/01/2016

Not only containing Thomas Hardy’s tree, this former graveyard is dense with history. Sir John Soane’s family mausoleum is here, the roof of which inspired the design of our famous telephone boxes.

Baroness Burdett-Coutts, the first woman peer, unveiled this grand memorial and sundial in 1879 to commemorate some of the illustrious people buried here. They include, amongst many others, the Chevalier d’Eon, transgender diplomat, soldier and spy.

Statues around the memorial include this one, supposedly modelled on the Baroness’s collie dog.

And another one: Johann Christian Bach, son of JS Bach, who died in London.
