A quick work trip to Paris meant I could squeeze in a couple of shows between meetings. I managed to catch this exhibition of window displays designed over the years by Leila Menchari for Hermes at the Institut du Monde Arabe. A few photos at the last Maison & Objet had whetted my appetite. I can now understand women wanting to keep buying the same design in different variations – this was a masterclass in working the permutations of a classic. The settings and props were as much to be admired as the Hermes pieces. Moroccan mastercraftspeople were also there, producing as well as selling their wares. Very useful sourcing information, particularly for home and interiors.
After this I walked over to L’Hotel de Ville to visit the Izis photography exhibition. He was a Lithuanian who left his country to find the Paris of his dreams. He worked extensively with Paris Match for over 20 years after the Second World War as well as producing 10 books on special projects including the coronation of Elizabeth II. The publishers had to buy in a standard coronation photo of the queen for the book as he was far too interested in photographing the backstreets of London.
