Greenpeace Rainbow Warrior III in London

14/11/2011

This post is all about innovative design, vision and  sustainability and lyricism.

I was fortunate enough to tour Rainbow Warrior III, Greenpeace‘s new boat yesterday, built to their specifications so completely bespoke. It is a beauty (I’ve always had trouble calling boats “she” ) with very distinctive A-line masts allowing it to carry almost 13oo square metres of sail. That’s about the size of  four and a half tennis courts.

This boat is built for speed, with the below-water hull of  a yacht, giving it the possibility of reaching 15 knots. Again, for the non-tech amongst us including me, that’s as fast as many of the industrial vessels they’ll be challenging.

As has to be expected all the possible environmental boxes have been ticked: wind is the main source of power with back-up from electric and diesel engines when required. Heat from the engines will be recycled for internal heating and hot water. Biological treatment of black and grey water is in place as well as exhaust gas treatment to reduce harmful emissions. The entire cradle to grave cycle has been considered.

There is a full media centre on board as well as plenty of space for scientific analysis. In short everything the teams will need. Oh, and a helipad at the back as well as the obligatory outboards which can be launched in 5 minutes.

A truly inspiring sight in London’s Docklands which gives me hope for our future.
