This exhibition is all about one painting in the collection: “The Virgin of the Rocks”, giving context and background to the work.
The entrance features images, reproductions of drawings nd statements from the artist’s notebooks. The text is reflected in mirrors to the side but I enjoyed the game of reading them back to front.
Most of this “experience” is digitally rendered so one room is a combination of studio and laboratory
with analysis projected onto a canvas:
closeups
and infra-red scanning etc.
Another room encouraged you to play with chiaroscuro, varying the type of shadow depending on the movement of “sunlight” on a dial – here are two images of the same photo.
After all that my first reaction was to think I was standing in front of another digital image but no, this was the actual painting in a digitally rendered altarpiece. A bit odd really.
It’s on till the 12th of January so only a few more days to catch it live.
