It’s always interesting to see what graduates get up to after the excitement of their degree shows. A couple who caught my eye last year were now showing at the One Year On exhibition.
Lyn Snow, whose website is currently in development produced bold splashy prints reminiscent of The Cloth from the 80’s but graffiti-like and layered up with machine embroidery. She calls herself a textile illustrator which is pretty apt. It was a joy last year to see someone not enslaved to digital printing.
I’m not a Luddite but digital printing is just a tool (albeit wonderful), just like CAD. There is an awful lot to be said for the quality of hand-produced mark-making and it shows in the images below.
The work of Sebastian Cox is light, elegant and yes, sustainable. This is one of my favourite approaches: make something beautiful which also happens to be as environmentally friendly as possible. He’s set up a workshop and is already selling in mainland Europe: a Parisian shop picked up on his coat stand which has got him into batch production, so different from creating one-offs.
He even sent me these images from his website as it was difficult to get good shots at the show.
Oh yes, and apparently he’s one of Kevin McCloud’s Green Heroes.
